Memories and Hallucinations
(Gollancz, 1989)
I wrote this during a depression, when I had a terrible writers' block and couldn't even read. It was all I could do to glance through the newspaper. I played highlights of 'South Pacific' over and over, and drove my family mad.
When I started taking some psychotherapy, I thought, since I was delving into memories, I might as well try to put them into written form, as a book.
'An amazingly honest autobiography... what other famous novelist would write so openly about himself?'
--Sunday Express
'An exceptional explorationof the sources of his artistic inspiration.'
--San Francisco Chronicle
